J. Ryan Stradal offers a good taste of Minnesota in this book. A love of beer drives a wedge between sisters resulting in Edith living a life of struggle and Helen living a life of success. The wedge is creatively removed as the story develops thru the hard work ethic of mid-westerners.J. Ryan Stradal offers a good taste of Minnesota in this book. I think Elinor LIpman's writing never disappoints. Her clever idea of two people meeting in their apartment building in NYC by way of their ankle monitors for court directed home confinement is so entertaining. How she weaves together the lives of Jane, the lawyer, Perry, the art auction house criminal, and all the other characters reaches way beyond the walls of Jane and Perry's confinement. The intrigue begins with an indecent exposure and a tea pot lid in a pocket.I think Elinor LIpman's writing never disappoints. A masterfully told story, Sweet Spot moved along at a quick pace as it gathered people, places and events in sort of a circular design. About all kinds of families united by blood and choice, Amy Poeppel welcomes the reader into all the tangles that come along as people react to the challenges of life. The character development made me wish I was a part of the entertaining group. Really hated to put it down and was satisfied, but sad for it to end. Each of Poeppel's books have made connections with me and I enjoyed them totally.A masterfully told story, Sweet Spot moved along at a quick pace as it gathered people, places and events in sort of a circular design. Loved this book, the magic and whimsy, associated with a wonderful octopus. Hoping there may be a sequel that is as good as this one.

The beautiful relationship between a 70 year old, heartbroken, aquarium cleaning lady and the resident octopus is an important, no, critical element of this wonderful book. You must be a person who believes/accepts that intricate understanding/communications are possible between an animal and a human. Added to this, there is true suspense, colorful character description and development and the pleasure of an intricate story very truly well told. YES, I will seek out Van Pelt's next book and who knows, the rugged car with the Texas plates that drove into town in the final chapter may be the hint of a sequel. The beautiful relationship between a 70 year old, heartbroken, aquarium cleaning lady and the resident octopus is an important, no, critical element of this wonderful book. Great fiction story that was inspired by a true story of a small village, British shop girl who gets swept up in the lives of the wealthy and rock stars in the Marrakesh of the '60s. Music, art, literature, drugs and orgies were the scene and it sounded totally authentic and interesting to learn about a life style unbeknownst to me. Definitely will follow Jane Green to more of her books.Great fiction story that was inspired by a true story of a small village, British shop girl who gets swept up in the lives of the wealthy and rock stars in the Marrakesh of the '60s. Gemstones as the title for each chapter won my heart and the descriptions of the gems influences was added pleasure for me. The Stone family was estranged but when 16 year old Gemma arrived on her uncle's door step, events began happening for the whole family. It was a sweet story, but the talk about the gems and their effect on the people of the village was what I liked the most.Gemstones as the title for each chapter won my heart and the descriptions of the gems influences was added pleasure for me. I enjoyed every bit of this book, quirky characters, struggling family dynamics and the epilogue brought the story to a satisfying conclusion. Kate seems headed for a spinster life of caring for her academic father and cute entitled younger sister both of whom think the world revolves around themselves, but a surprise, unlikely twist provides her a chance of breaking free. This is a great book! I had a little trouble keeping track of the characters' names but I adore a book that is so good in translation that I don't think it could possibly be better if I learn the original language. How do you handle your regrets is one of the topics I pondered as I read. Bravo to the artist who read the book, yes, I listened to it. Now I must go back and read the first book of the series, with which I should have started!!!This is a great book!
