Our occasional Adult Social Justice Book Club is open to any adults in the community who are interested in attending. The club will explore topics related to social justice by reading and discussing nonfiction books that together cover a broad range of important issues.
All meetings are free to attend and will be held at the East Lansing Public Library in the 3/4 room. Light snacks and beverages will be provided. Below are the dates, times, and titles for the next four meetings:
Radical Hope: Tuesday, October 15th, 7:00 - 8:30 PM
"Radical Hope is a collection of letters to ancestors, to children five generations from now, to strangers in grocery lines, to any and all who feel weary and discouraged́, written by award-winning novelists, poets, political thinkers, and activists."
When They Call You A Terrorist: Tuesday, January 21st, 2020, 7:00 - 8:30 PM
"A memoir by the co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement explains the movement's position of love, humanity, and justice, challenging perspectives that have negatively labeled the movement's activists while calling for essential political changes."
Glimmer of Hope: Tuesday, March 17th, 2020, 7:00 - 8:30 PM
"The murder of 17 students and teachers from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in a mass shooting by a former classmate sparked the March for Our Lives movement and nonprofit organization. [This book] 'tells the story of how a group of teenagers raced to channel their rage and sorrow into action, and went on to create one of the largest youth-led movements in global history'"
I Can't Date Jesus: Tuesday, June 16th 2020, 7:00 - 8:30 PM
"With the characteristic wit and candor that have made him one of today's boldest writers on social issues, I Can't Date Jesus is Michael Arceneaux's impassioned, forthright, and refreshing look at minority life in today's America. Leaving no bigoted or ignorant stone unturned, he describes his journey in learning to embrace his identity when the world told him to do the opposite."
