Edible Wild Plants Presentation/Exploration with Peter Carrington, PhD

10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
East Lansing Public Library

Description

Join Peter Carrington, PhD at the East Lansing Public Library for an engaging introductory workshop about the edible wild plants of mid-Michigan.  Many varieties of wild plants make their home in mid-Michigan, some of which are safe and nutritious to eat while others pose a toxic risk to people or pets.  This presentation will teach us the basics about some of these plants and how we might identify them. After the presentation portion, interested attendees may join Peter for an exploration around the Library grounds to learn about some of the wild plants growing there.  Attendees interested in joining Peter for an exploration of the Library grounds should dress for the weather, taking any of their usual preferred precautions (sun, insects, elements, etc.).

Peter has served as the curator of the WJ Beal Botantical Garden at MSU, where he specialized in edible and toxic plants for both people and animals. He is passionate about education, and he has spent over thirty-five years sharing his passion for plants and the natural world with others as an instructor at Lansing Community College and at Michigan State University’s Beal Garden. He has taught courses about edible wild plants, toxic wild plants, and wilderness survival techniques. He also serves as a consultant to the regional poison control center, advises several zoos concerning their plantings, and teaches veterinary students about toxic plants that may pose a risk to animals.
