If you've ever played Russian Roulette, you'd know exactly what the film is saying; besides, I met the real Michael, no not play actor DeNiro. In Michael's eyes, you've got one shot in life. Make it a good one.

Honestly, I have no idea why this movie is so acclaimed. Yes, it shows war, and it's intensely violent which is what you need in a war film like this, but I didn't like the main characters, it dragged really bad and took forever to go…

Great movie. Character development is the most important aspect in this movie. At least one hour spent at the beginning of the movie to let us know the intertwining between each character. Makes the end all that more meaningful.

The 70s were definitely a different era of filmmaking. I wonder if thrle other 3.5 hrs of this film were any good because the wedding scene took over an hour in the "beginning" and could have been maybe a 10 minute scene. Not sure why this…

This is a real classic about the Vietnam War and the brutality of war in general. Very realistic, showing how some American POWs were brutally treated by North Vietnamese Regulars. Gripping and extremely memorable performances by De Niro…

This film is largely a narratively disjointed mess. And with all due respect to Mike Lofgren*, his claim that "The movie is suffused with the notion of the wounded innocence of a valorized white working class fighting in a righteous (but…

Dodging charges of racism against The Deer Hunter's portrayal of the revolutionary Vietnamese military, especially in the forced Russian roulette of the second "act", director-coauthor Cimino countered that the deadly game of chance was a…

Mike Lofgren says it best:
What we get from The Deer Hunter is this: Vietnam is methodically decontextualized and depoliticized; Americans are portrayed as the innocent victims of treacherous, bestial “Orientals.” It was almost as if we…
One of the greatest war drama movies, along with Apocalypse Now, Cross of Iron, Platoon, and Full Metal Jacket.
The Russian roulette scene inspired Megadeth's song "My Last Words" on the "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying" LP.

When the fantasy of being a macho soldier meets reality of war and how that war shapes and twists them forever. A reality check. One of my all time favs. Right up there with Born on the 4th of July.

Cimino is a great director who takes his time in a long, careful first act before throwing his characters inside a terrifically tense, gut-wrenching second act that makes us deeply consider the tragic effects of war on veterans, with…

Directed by Michael Cimino and released in 1978, this 183-minute Vietnum-war-time drama tells the story of a trio of Russian American steelworkers whose lives are changed forever after they fight in the Vietnam War.
One of the most…

I think the storyline was great, and the acting superb but I felt the story leading up to their departure to Vietnam was too long and the filming of their time in Vietnam was too short. I really thought the story of their time in Vietnam…
Excellent film, one of my all-time favorites. Each actor in his or her own magnificence, all presenting marvels of insight into their particular characters. Nowadays younger people have no contact with the draft, but it was all-pervasive…

A heartwretching tale about the horrors of war. It's power still stands today, especially with all the other wars which followed this one and all the wars still occurring today.
I was a young teen when this Restricted movie came out and couldn't watch it. I never did get around to seeing it, even though I've watched hundreds of great films since. Just picked it up recently and wow.....I was moved. Each actor…
