The rhythm and rhymes make this tale of the clever mouse outwitting bigger, more threatening animals he encounters in the woods a great read-aloud. Kids can relate to the small victor.

I recently saw a friend's picture posted on Facebook that revealed her oldest son reading The Gruffalo to his younger sister and his cousins. Up to that point I have never read The Gruffalo. I have heard about it over the years, I have…

A house favourite. As always, Julia Donaldson's writing is singsongy and wonderful to read aloud. The story is clever and the illustrations are wonderful. We love reading The Gruffalo again and again.

This was one of my son's favorite books way back when. It was out of print at that time so I found and ordered a used copy. He was so happy to listen to it again and again. The mouse's fabulous wit and the unexpected twist at the end make…

This book has beautiful and colorful illustrations that are engaging. The story contains a clever mouse who uses his intelligence to keep from being eaten. The concept of animal homes is introduced to children. I like the fact that the…

The Gruffalo has a close resemblance to the scary characters in Maurice Sendak's classic children's story "Where The Wild Things Are" of 1964. This story is clever.

I love this book, and love reading it to the 2.5 year old I watch, he adores it. However, the 5 year old gets nightmares from it, I'm not sure how.
Very cute story, very clever mouse.

Good illustrations but I have mixed feelings about the messages:
1) beware suspicious invitations - good.
2) lying as a survival strategy - probably effective in the short term but not, I think, the only choice.
3) mouse as vegetarian?

Definitely needs voices for the different characters, especially the Gruffalo. Lots of fun, showing that even if you are a mouse there is no reason you can't outwit those bigger than you.

Julia Donaldson is MY favorite children's author. Her books are fun to read, and carry stories that teach children that situations are not always what they seem, without talking down to them. I think I read them 50% for me and 50% for my…
