Although "People of Sparks" continued the plot in a very logical manner--it felt like it suited the characters and situation well--it didn't hold the same sense of suspense and mystery that the first one did for me. There was certainly plenty of conflict (with some rather unpleasant characters, I might add) and plenty at stake; I was invested in the fate of the people of Ember. Yet everyone was so unpleasant and illogical that my frustration at the situation made it difficult to like the characters at times. I think it ties everything up nicely enough. I'm glad I read it as a conclusion to the series (I know there are two more, but I think it's too well tied-up to eplore the story further).

I really enjoyed reading City of Ember, the first book in the series, so I was interested in trying out this book. I checked out the audio book on CD but I didn't finish it. I just didn't like the reader as her voicing of the characters seemed overdone. Maybe I'll try reading the book at some point...it seems to have a very relevant message about greed and mistrust.

The main characters are refugees in this post-apocalyptic novel. There are great lessons here on overcoming resentment, greed, and fear. Works very well as an allegory on how wars begin, and how to stop the cycle.
