Utterly charming children's book describing a month's research tour of part of the Aleutian Islands. Webb was one of the ornithologists and painters on board; the illustrations are hers. Her job was to census the seabirds as they went through the passes between islands. The research was focused on the decline in sea lions. Both the sea lions and sea birds eat the same foods. The birds were more easily spotted than the sea lions. She was able to make all this totally clear. Also made clear what it felt like to be cold, wet, seasick, and stuck on a crowded boat with an international crew in "spring" (May). Lovely little book that taught me a lot, not least from the watercolors. Many of them would be worth framing.
