As unquestioned master of the "grotesque", early 19th century writer Edgar Allan Poe is fully represented in this classic collection originally published under the title Selected Writings. David Galloway's introduction reveals Poe not only as a complex personality and one of America's most exotic writers, but also as an individual who engaged in an astonishing variety of interests.

A few of the best short stories Edgar Allan Poe wrote in my opinion from The Raven to the Tell tale heart. All of these short stories of poems are classics and derive their fear factor from playing on the terrors of the unknown, madness, and sickness. I recommend this book of poems to anyone interested in gothic horror or with an interest into Victorian era horror. The subject matter of the books coupled with how well they are written earn this book a 5/5. @selfhelpguru of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board
