Princess Thirrin, a teenager, becomes the queen of Icemark after her father is killed and must take over the country's defense against the Polypontian Empire, relying on help from Oskan, a witch's son, in order to save her people.

Scholastic
A brave girl must defy an empire to save her homeland in a sweeping fantasy that combines breathless action with richly-imagined characters.

After the death of her beloved father, headstrong princess Thirrin Freer Strong-In-The-Arm becomes warrior queen of her homeland, Icemark, defending it from a formidable invader. Despite Thirrin's bravery and the support of Oskan, the Witch's son, the task proves more difficult than Thirrin ever dreamed. She must assemble a force to rival her opponent. And, in the chill winter of Icemark, she only has until spring to unite the strange beasts and frightening creatures who live just outside her country. Ultimately, it is Thirrin's vision and determination that will see her through to victory.

It was amazing! All work and no play for Thirrin and Oskan. Can't wait to read the next one. It was so good that I stayed up a lot of nights reading it.

I found ‘The Cry of the Icemark’ slow for the first 50 pages. It did improve as I continued to read it and it had a strong finish; not a great book but it was a good book overall to read. Doctor-at-Bass! T. A.

The Cry of the Icemark was an exhilirating, fascinating novel. It is not a fantasy war, merely a war that includes fantasy. If you don't like fantasy but want to get into it, this is a good place to start.

I thought the book was quite good. Personally, I enjoyed it due to the battle scenes. It is a children book though. Maybe 11 and up? hard to remember what I was like at that age :)

I can't say I particularly liked The Cry of the Icemark. I mean, I liked it enough to read the sequel, but really, there is just too much suspension of disbelief involved in reading this book. That being said, its good enough if you need to kill time. I'm gonna have to say, 2.5 stars, maybe three.

This book was quite good. I wasn't too fond of it at the beginning, but it improved a lot along the way. It's sequel also holds a lot of promise.
