You had better know French as the subtitles don't work on this.

An oh so sweet story of redemption and joy through music...in parts very sweet, but excusably so. Makes a perfect film for an evening when you just need some positive reinforcement.

This is a 2004 French drama directed by Christophe Barratier. When he takes a job teaching music at a school for troubled boys, Clément Mathieu is unprepared for its harsh discipline and depressing atmosphere. With passion and unconventional teaching method, however, he is able to spark his students' interest in music and bring them a newfound joy. It is an enchantingly fascinating, somewhat heart-wrenching yet profoundly moving drama.

Inspiring French film (2004, subtitled) of a mild mannered teacher taking a job at a school for troubled boys. His unconventional methods of reaching the boys slowly brings a new spirit to the school, especially as they get interested in music. The headmaster, a strict disciplinarian, makes it an uphill battle. The music in the film is sublime. Multiple nominations and winner of film awards.

The disc I borrowed did not appear to be scratched, but would not play all the way through in my machine. Too bad, because I liked what I saw.

Pure magic. I've watched it over and over again, and I can't grow tired of it...the best foreign film made.

The music is haunting, sublime and integral to the plot. The plot, while familiar (sympathetic teacher leads wayward kids against unfair administration) benefits from some excellent acting and beautiful direction and cinematography. Not everyone is "perfect" and not everyone is "saved" but in the transcendent moments the viewer (and many of the characters) is lifted by the music to higher plane of compassion. Well worth your time if you like serious film.
