This is the first of four Westerns by Robert B. Parker, who is more well known for his mystery novels. The fast pace of the story and the simple dialogue make this a pleasant and light read, especially if you are used to the more wordy Louis L'Amour style of western. Appaloosa is relatively gritty and hits on all the tropes you would expect: hardened lawmen, overpowered and power-hungry wealthy landowner and quite a bit of gun fighting here and there. This is the perfect read for someone who wants something light and easy to read while still being an engaging and enjoyable experience.

What a great book! For sheer easy and enjoyable reading, it doesn't get much better than 'Appaloosa'. Parker's well-drawn characters, Virgil Cole and Everitt Hitch, are both everything you might expect from a Western and also completely novel. The book is worth reading for the dialogue alone, which is often dry and hilarious. Parker knows his stuff, and 'Appaloosa' delivers - good story-telling, fun plot, excellent characters, and lots of action. One of my favorites.
