A collection of stories offers empathetic portraits of unanchored people finding love and a renewal of traditions, including a man's life-changing ride with a one-armed female hitchhiker and a camera repairman who discovers a woman's secrets in her undeveloped film

McMillan Palgrave
A master storyteller's triumphant, moving collection about lost souls, found love, and rediscovered tradition

Tim Gautreaux returns to the form that won him his first fans, with tales of family, sin, and redemption: from a man who realizes his grandchildren are growing up without any sense of right or wrong, and he's to blame; to a camera repairman who uncovers a young woman's secret in the undeveloped film she brings him; to a one-armed hitch-hiker who changes the life of the man who gives her a ride.

Each one a small miracle of storytelling and compassion, these stories are a joyous confirmation of Tim Gautreaux's rare and generous talent.

The two previous commentators are right on. The only thing to add is, if you like laugh-out-loud; snorting through your nose stories, this man is for you.

Set in rural Louisiana and spiked with humor reminiscent of Flannery O’Connor and Mark Twain, many of these stories address moral questions, such as the title story, in which a grandfather increasingly finds himself parenting the children of his irresponsible daughters, whom he neglected as children. Gautreaux's stories have appeared in the Best American Short Stories anthology many times, and with good reason: this reader believes he is America's greatest living short story writer.

If you like an author that can paint pictures with words and can put you inside someones head all in the space of a short story then you will enjoy this book. I did.
