Nonny Frett understands the meaning of "between a rock and a hard place." She's got two mothers, "one deaf-blind and the other four baby steps from flat crazy." She's got two men: her husband, easing out the back door; and her best friend, laying siege to her heart in her front yard. She has a job that holds her in the city, and she's addicted to a little girl stuck deep in the country. And she has two families: the Fretts, who stole her and raised her right; and the Crabtrees, who lost her and won't forget how they were done wrong. In Between, Georgia, population 90, a feud that began the night Nonny was born is escalating, and a random act of violence is about to ignite a stash of family secrets. This might be just what the town needs, if only Nonny wasn't sitting in the middle of it.--From publisher description.Unduly familiar with choosing between sides throughout her lifetime, Nonny Frett finds herself once again caught in the middle between an escalating family feud that began before her birth and the realization of her own dreams.

Nonny Frett understands the meanings of "rock" and "hard place" better than any other woman ever born. She's got two mothers, "one deaf-blind and the other four baby steps from flat crazy." She's got two men: her husband, who's easing out the back door; and her best friend, who's laying siege to her heart in her front yard. She has a job that holds her in the city, and she's addicted to a little girl who's stuck deep in the country. To top it off, she has two families; the Fretts, who stole her and raised her right; and the Crabtrees, who lost her and can't forget that they've been done wrong.
In Between, Georgia, population 90, a feud that began the night Nonny was born is escalating, and a random act of violence will set the torch to a thirty-year-old stash of highly flammable secrets. This might be just what the town needs, if only Nonny wasn't sitting in the middle of it.

'Between, Georgia' is a modern day 'Hatfield's and McCoy's' told with richness, exasperation and quirky humor. Some of the 'Southern-ness' is missing from these Southern women, but considering the drama, and humor of the few days over which this story occurs, it's to be forgiven as their strength and their stubborn are all too clear and clearly Southern. The characters, with all their flaws, are made real by Jackson.

The story is about families: those you have, those you want, those who want you and those you sometimes wish you could deny. Familial blood gives you family ties, but love makes you part of a family. The story is all about making sense of the "between".

I am a fan of Joshilyn Jackson, many published after 'Between, Georgia', and it's clear her writing has grown since her earlier books.

I loved this book - listened to it on CD as read by the author and was so sad to have it end that I even listened to the credits. Excellent, excellent characters.

when i'm missing the south (where i grew up), i simply pick up a joshilyn jackson novel and i'm transported. she paints a brilliant picture of eccentric charaters and absorbing plot...between, georgia is a real page-turner.
