When a member of an Internet mailing group turns up dead, his peers take it upon themselves to investigate the crime, much to the annoyance of the FBI and Anneke Hagen, who is having enough trouble preparing for her wedding
The week before they are to be married, Anneke Haagen and Karl Genseko are dealing with the usual pre-wedding nightmares. They are preparing for the imminent arrival of Anneke's family and also making sure that the new best man has everything he needs.
Amidst all of this chaos, Anneke still has time to work on her computer games and chat on-line with a group of computer gamers. The cast of on-line characters ranges from a party girl to a high school introvert to an overly angry man. But when "Vince Mattus," a generally despised person on the mailing list, is murdered, the time for games is over.
Anneke is shocked to learn of his death and even more surprised to learn that she and Karl, a police lieutenant, are suspects in the case. With their wedding only a few days away, Karl and Anneke decide to do some investigating of their own. They figure that since all of the suspects can solve computer games, why not have them solve a murder game in which they are all the prime suspects?
As the game plays out, the suspects learn how little they really know about one another, and this puts Karl and Anneke in more danger than they ever could have imagined.
