Summary
Add a SummaryThe story begins in Plum Creek, shortly after the family has recovered from the scarlet fever which caused Mary to become blind. The family welcomes a visit from Aunt Docia, whom they had not seen for several years. She suggests that Pa and Ma move out west to Dakota Territory and offers Pa a job working as the bookkeeper in Uncle Henry’s railroad camp for fifty dollars a month. Ma and Pa agree because the money will relieve their debts and Pa can look for a homestead while he works.

this book is super good
Besides Mary's blindness and the cons of moving, I was excited that after their years at Plum Creek they would move West where the land was wilder and unexpected things happened (which would provide more adventures). This book makes a turning point in all of their lives. I really loved reading this book!
i loved the earlier years of this series better than the older ones but their were all very special to watch.
The kids grew up on the series and that was special too. They went on to do wonderful things in their lifes after the series ended.
i love this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The scarlet fever that lays the family low, leaves Mary blind and precedes Pa’s decision to move West again unfortunately happens before the first page. Perhaps that tragedy would be too much for tiny homesteaders to experience, so instead this book passes its time with the smaller hardships of settlers’ daily life. Laura’s biggest hardship of all is being as good as her parents want her to be when some days all she wants to do is fling herself on the flowery prairie grass and roll like a colt.
Almanzo Wilder, Laura’s future husband, makes a fleeting appearance at the end of the book as he flies past them on the prairie with his team of beautiful horses.
