ELIZABETH I is the best film (actually a 2005 HBO miniseries) about Queen Elizabeth I've ever seen. I saw it about 10 years ago when it first came out, and recently I decided to watch it again and compare it to Cate Blanchett's ELIZABETH (1998) and ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE (2007.) It blows those two movies out of the water. The miniseries is more historically faithful than the films, and Helen Mirren's portrayal of Queen Elizabeth captures the monarch's complicated personality traits; her egotism, her girlish naivete regarding romance, and her profound capability as a stateswoman. But Mirren isn't alone...she is bolstered by fine performances all around her. What a treat to see how well ELIZABETH I holds up after a decade! I totally recommend this film.
So Helen Mirren played both Queen Elizabeths? A least this one isn't marred by all that "Holy Diana" overhype like the other one.
Beautiful costumes and sets illuminated by the stellar acting of Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons make Elizabeth and her great friend Robert Liester come alive.
Bravo! Helen Mirren
Helen Mirren is tremendous in this, and the production is top shelf.
An intimate view of the latter half of Queen Elizabeth I's reign. The movie concentrates on her personal relationships with three suitors, her advisors and the rest of her court. Also intertwined is the history of Elizabeth's struggle to keep England united and strong. That included fighting rivals from Spain, Rome and other parts of England. Although not quite as ruthless as her father, Henry VIII, Elizabeth still wielded her considerable power to punish her enemies. Overall the movie is well done with lavish costumes and realistic enactments of everyday life.
The best version of all the Q 1 films I've ever seen. Clear & comprehensible presentation of historic occurances. I stand in awe of Helen Miran.
Script emphasizes Elizabeth's sentimental and tempermental excesses at the expense of her great achievements, but Helen Mirren gives a worthy performance nevertheless. Superb costumes and some interesting, graphic reenactments of contemporary execution and torture methods.
