I'm a fan of Deborah Smith, and this is one of her very best. 'A Gentle Rain' (also owned by SPL) is still my absolute favorite, but this has strong dibs on second.
The only problem with it is that it is hard to put down - don't read it when others expect your attention!
A lot happens to the characters, and that seems a little contrived at times, but overall it is a very good story with great characters (one of my favorite things about Smith's books are the characters.) I also like that there aren't fabricated villians, but more realistic impediments to the character's development.
Truly, this is a great read and I'm so glad SPL decided to replace its copies in the collection!
