Eleven year-old Akeelah Anderson's life is not easy: her father is dead, her mom ignores her, her brother runs with the local gangbangers. She is a smart girl, but her environment threatens to strangle her aspirations. Responding to a threat by her school's principal, Akeelah decides to participate in a spelling bee to avoid detention for her many absences. Much to her surprise and embarrassment, she wins. Her principal asks her to seek coaching from Dr. Larabee, an English professor, for the more prestigious regional bee. As the possibility of making it all the way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee looms, Akeelah could provide her community with someone to rally around and be proud of. First Akeelah has to overcome her insecurities, her distracting home life, and the knowledge that there is a field of more experienced and privileged fellow spellers.

An inspiring story that uses the unlikely vehicle of a spelling bee to illustrate a young girl's persistence in growing out of the cramped role supposedly predestined for her. Keke Palmer does a great job in portraying a young girl in South Los Angeles, with an overworked single mom who pays more attention to keeping her younger son out of the gang lifestyle. The mom initially allows her own insecurities to block Keke's progress. Very family-friendly. Its pacing is a bit off, though: Akeelah starts to gain some success, then a cascade of problems arise. Laurence Fishburne's performance is surprisingly flat.

Nice, charming movie about a girl who goes all the way to the National Spelling Bee. Laurence Fishburne is really good as Akeelah's mentor. Angela Bassett is excellent as Akeelah's mother. "Booger" from 1984's Revenge of the Nerds plays the principal. A little corny at times, but the sincerity of Fishburne and Bassett carry the movie. The quote from Marianne Williamson resonates: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure."
