Anchorage private detective Kate Shugak and Alaska state trooper Jim Chopin pursue Louis Deem, a man arrested for and acquitted of the murder of his wife, after a witness to the shooting of a woman and her son places Deem at the scene of the crime.

McMillan Palgrave
In A Deeper Sleep, her first novel since Blindfold Game, the stand-alone political thriller that made Dana Stabenow a New York Times bestseller, Stabenow returns to the popular and award-winning Kate Shugak series.
Kate, a private investigator, has been working on a case for the Anchorage District Attorney involving the murder of a young woman by her husband, a man named Louis Deem. Deem has been the subject of investigations before, and he's never been convicted of a crime. But Kate and her on-again, off-again lover, state trooper Jim Chopin, who arrested Deem, are convinced that this time it's different, and he'll finally be punished for his actions.
When the jury returns a verdict of not guilty, Kate and Jim are devastated, and like the rest of the citizens of Niniltna, Alaska, certain that a man has gotten away with murder. They can't help but think that it's only a matter of time before he's in the frame for another killing. Sure enough, a few weeks later a shooting leaves two dead in an apparent robbery. But this time Kate and Jim have a witness, and they're not going to let Louis Deem get away again. Or will he?
Dana Stabenow, Edgar Award-winning author and New York Times bestselling thriller writer, delivers a gripping page-turner about one town's search for justice--at any cost.

New author for me. Writes a lot like craig Johnson and c.j.box. Interesting twists but still a good read.

Wealthy Louis Deem has gotten away with murder, often of beautiful young women he marries, one time too many, and Jim and Kate are sure they can nail him this time. One problem is that the witness is Kate's teenage ward, a boy she hopes to adopt. Unfortunately, she and Jim suspect Deem knows the boy saw him, putting the kid's life in danger. An evangelical family's moved to town, with 21 or more kids, (a new baby's due any minute), everyone of legal age, and maybe some under age, packing a rifle. The boys wear biblical long hair, the girls long dresses, sunbonnets, and braids. The family's bulldozer makes a road next to a creek suspected of having an oil seep, and they squat on public land, building cabins, settling in for winter. Deem in record time gets himself engaged to the beautiful oldest daughter. What's in it for him? The tiny town is split over the family, which more than doubles the population, and can be friendly when they want. Why do the family want to stay? Tensions escalate, until finally the "fiancee" and her next sister decide to make a run for it, and everything breaks loose.

Pretty good story, but disturbing! It's not very often you root for the murder to happen. But happen it does! But there are loose ends, which are resolved in a later book. Good read.
