Hired by former Detroit Tigers pitcher Darius Fuller to break up his daughter's romance with Hilary Bairn, a presumed fortune-hunter, Amos Walker gets more than he bargained for when Fuller's daughter turns up dead.
Darius Fuller, former pitching great for the Detroit Tigers and a buddy of Amos Walker, has a simple job for his detective friend: end the engagement between Fuller's daughter and her boyfriend. Fuller is convinced that the boyfriend, Hilary Bairn, is only after the two-million-dollar trust fund his daughter will receive on her fast-approaching twenty-fifth birthday.
When Walker arrives at Bairn's apartment to check the guy out, he finds himself swarmed by the police. Fuller's daughter has been killed, and the cops believe Bairn is the murderer. Walker has two options: help the cops find Bairn or fall under suspicion himself.
Walker follows a trail of clues to a seedy casino owner, who says Bairn owes money to Wilson Watson, a loan shark. Watson in turn tells Walker he's not the only one after Bairn and warns him he'll live a lot longer if he minds his own business.
But Walker is either too tough or too stubborn to take this advice, and when he runs afoul of an immigrant-smuggling operation, he's sure he has found his killer ... only to discover that he has just scratched the surface of a criminal organization whose evil is beyond even Walker's imagination. And when he's knocked unconscious and comes to lying next to a dead body, he realizes that the big question is not whether he'll find the killer, but whether he'll make it out alive.
Hardboiled detective Amos Walker returns for his nineteenth outing in his most challenging case yet. Ex-Detroit Tigers pitcher Darius Fuller wants Walker to break off his daughter's engagement to Hilary Bairn, a man he believes is after her two million dollar trust.
