Barbara is a cynical schoolteacher who is close to retirement. Her only means of taking the edge off her desperate loneliness is writing in her journal. Sheba is a younger, attractive woman, who joins the faculty as an art teacher. Barbara watches her from afar and has nothing but caustic things to say in her diary. Barbara finds herself reaching out to Sheba. Sheba responds by inviting her to dinner at her house to meet Sheba's lecturer husband and their two children. Later, when Barbara discovers that Sheba is having a sexual relationship with a 15-year old student, Barbara realizes that knowledge of this secret gives her power over Sheba which she can use for her own purposes. Sheba becomes uneasy with Barbara's friendship. The tenuous relationship between the two women reaches a crisis point when Barbara's cat is dying and she asks Sheba to go with her to the vet. Sheba chooses to go with her family to see their son in a play instead. In revenge, Barbara sets in motion the scandal that will rock both their lives in ways they never imagined.

Judy Dench, Cate Blanchett and Bill Nightly are fantastic actors. Very interesting movie, Judy Dench's performance evokes a lot of emotions, none of them very nice. This is not just a story of a very dysfunctional family but of evil where you would least expect to find it. I found the 15 year old to be extremely manipulative, for the age of 15 he used seduction, affection and then withdrawal of affection to reach his own personal goal!

I actually liked this movie a lot more than I thought I would.
Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett were perfectly cast for these roles. Takes a topic that may come across as cliche and shallow and turns it into a rather interesting journey, thanks also to a well written script. I could definitely see myself going back to this again in the future.
FYI, not for kids

Very interesting story about female relationships and betrayal. Never seen Judi Dench in a role like this. WOW!

I thoroughly enjoyed this compelling psychological drama and the performances by Judi Dench and Kate Blanchett were superb.

The subject matter is enough to say this isa terrible movie. However, the acting is great, the story is well written and the vocabulary is excellent (lots of thought put into it). Like someone else said, I can’t recommend this movie but for what it is, it’s a good movie.

This is a very suspenseful character study. It's not perfect, but the acting is superb and story development (and character development for that matter) is gripping. This is very close to being a must see, and although it could have been a little better it still won't leave with a feeling of disappointment.

I enjoy both Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench and had wanted to see this movie for quite a while. I was intrigued with how the film would handle the sticky situation of a teacher-pupil affair.

All in all, I found the movie rather distrurbing and my significant other found it "sick".

I wouldn't recommend this movie as a "must see," actually I don't think that I would recommend it at all.

Thanks to strong performances by the two leads, I enjoyed this film's portrayal of the relationship between two not-very-stable female high-school teachers--one of whom ends up having an affair with a 15-year-old student. But I wouldn't recommend watching the film more than once and advise treading cautiously, because one of my trusted sources thought the film was "sick".

Sheba Hart: I hadn't been pursued like this for years... I knew it was wrong, and immoral, and completely ridiculous, but, I don't know. I just allowed it to happen.
Barbara Covett: The boy is fifteen!
Sheba Hart: But he's quite mature for his age!

Barbara Covett: Here come the local pubescent proles. The future plumbers, shop assistants, and doubtless the odd terrorist too. In the old days, we confiscated cigarettes and wank mags. Now it's knives and crack cocaine. And they call it progress.
