Alex Fletcher is a washed-up 80s pop star who has been reduced to working the nostalgia circuit of county fairs and amusement parks. The charismatic and talented musician gets a chance at a comeback when reigning pop diva Cora Corman invites him to write and record a duet with her. The only problem is that Alex has not written a song in years, he has never written lyrics, and what's worse, he has to come up with a hit in a matter of days. Sophie Fisher is Alex's beguilingly quirky plant lady, whose flair for words strikes a chord with the struggling songwriter. On the rebound from a bad relationship with the newly famous novelist Sloan Cates, Sophie is reluctant to collaborate with anyone, especially commitment-phobe Alex. As their chemistry heats up at the piano, Alex and Sophie will have to face their fears and the music if they want to find the love and success they both deserve.

Once upon a time Hugh Grant was a promising young actor (Sense and Sensibility, Maurice etc.) Sadly, he has morphed into a parody of himself with so many nervous tics and eye blinks that he is downright unwatchable. This film is awful in every imaginable way. For better romantic comedies please visit my "Kiss Me" list.

To my surprise, both actors were excellent, and had wonderful chemistry with each other. Good date night flick, won't disappoint.

well casted -- a light comedy that relies far too much on the strength of the actors -- but the end is pretty good

Alex Fletcher: The best time I've had in the last fifteen years was sitting at that piano with you.
Sophie Fisher: That's wonderfully sensitive... especially from a man who wears such tight pants.
Alex Fletcher: It forces all the blood to my heart.

Alex Fletcher: [singing] Sleeping with a clown above my bed...
[spoken]
Alex Fletcher: "Clown" is not right
Sophie Fisher: That's "cloud." Why would you put a clown in your bed?
Alex Fletcher: It would not be the first time.

A washed up singer is given a couple days to compose a chart-topping hit for an aspiring teen sensation. Though he's never written a decent lyric in his life, he sparks with an offbeat younger woman with a flair for words.
