When I was little, I always wanted to watch this movie because I've overheard my older sister talking about it with her friends. So I got to watch it with my mom afterwards. Now, I'm the mommy and I still find this film very charming. Yes I know most people criticize this film due to the prostitution but it's a movie! And lastly I like the added scenes in the movie since they weren't there originally when I've first watched it.

My new favorite movie

Cute and surprisingly engaging--I understand why this one is something of a modern classic. I had been told that the premise was more along the lines of "My Fair Lady," so I was a little surprised that Julia Roberts's character was a prostitute, and that she met Richard Gere's character mostly by accident, but once I quit trying to match it to "My Fair Lady," I really enjoyed the characters. This movie reminded me at times of "Miss Congeniality," and "The Proposal," with that late 80's/early 90's feel of "Turner and Hooch."

I've never found prostitution so charming!

Entertaining? Yes, but at what cost?
Unfortunately, too many of our young girls have believed that this could happen to them. After they are entangled in the web, they realize what a lie it is.
My daughter works with women trying to escape this lifestyle. There's nothing pretty about it.

A true classic romance. I loved watching Richard Gere and Julia Roberts together.

Morally questionable (I won't go on a tirade), but so easy to watch. It has this quality that makes it delightful, and I think it's the charismatic appeal of both then-up-and-comer Julia Roberts and that guy who works at the hotel played by the actor that everybody knows but can never remember his name. This film is one of those romantic comedies that is never going to go away, so I recommend each person watch it at least once, even if it's just to come to the conclusion that it's not for you.

The hooker with the heart of gold aka the virgin hooker aka the hooker as Cinderella. Originally the gal was supposed to be a genuine hooker, i.e. someone who gets paid for her non-involved lovemaking. Along came Julia Roberts with a smile as wide as the screen itself. Some of the most savvy people I know think this a wonderful movie. I agree with Janice21383's one-star rating, though I give that one for duplicity. There is a moment when Richard asks a question of Julia while she is is underwater in the swimming pool-sized bath. (Yes, Richard and Julia; those are the real characters here.) Julia rises through an upward splash to answer/shout, "YES!" OK, let's hear it for a hooker super power: hearing underwater. Double entrendre intended: Barnum scores again.

I believe I can answer your question, chris_anthony. See, there's this hooker, gorgeous, of course, but a girl next door. Let's call her very lightly used, like she just dated a lot. One of her johns is a scummy corporate raider. Does she make him appreciate The Real Things In Life (while simultaneously binging on shopping)? Does she transform him, with her love? Does she break away to become her own woman, but not really? Yes, yes, and yes! So there's your answer: insensitive modern audiences don't appreciate this brand of movie magic. Fun fact: this film started the "all movie girlfriends are strippers or hookers" trend in the 1990s.
