June 1, 2288-Europe's first starship, the EASS Galileo, launches on its maiden voyage to investigate an unidentified object, code-named Spindrift, which is traveling outside our solar system. An object that may be alien in origin. The Galileo disappears soon after...

February 1, 2344-The Galileo's shuttle returns to Earth carrying three surviving expedition members, who still appear to be the same age they were when they departed. They report that they have, indeed, made contact with an extraterrestrial race-and become enmeshed in a conflict that brought them face to face with the most apocalyptic force in the galaxy.

It is up to Director General John Shillinglaw to piece together the puzzle created by these events- for the survivors tell their stories from their own conflicting perspectives. And the truth is more difficult to glean than it appears.

February 1, 2344 - The Galileo's shuttle, the Maria Celeste, returns to Earth carrying three surviving expedition members and retrofitted with an advanced drive system. The Galileo has been destroyed and the rest of the crew is lost, but the survivors still appear to be the same age they were when they departed. What they report is even more disturbing. They have made contact with an extraterrestrial race and become enmeshed in a conflict that brought them face-to-face with the most apocalyptic force in the galaxy.

Good for author on what happened to the Europeans fatal trip. Well balanced story of awkward first contact.

I enjoyed this sf book a lot. I just discovered Steele and hope to read more. He reminded me of the novels of the late Arthur C. Clarke.

A nice story about humans' first contact with aliens. The pacing is good, the characters are good, and the story has some nice twists. It's a good mix of hard sci-fi and soft sci-fi, with enough about the ships, etc. to satisfy hard sci-fi fans while keeping enough about people to interest fans of soft sci-fi and fantasy.

A unique side story to the Coyote series about an encouter with the aliens who have introduced themselves to the Coyote culture. It builds more background to the aliens and their concepts. I like the whole Coyote series, and this is a good addition.
