Graphic Novel - 2005

Ichigo and company meet their first obstacle on the road to saving Rukia from the Soul Society. It is Jidanbô, the monstrous gatekeeper who hasn't let anyone enter the gate he guards in over 300 years, but Ichigo just sees that as an extra challenge. Anything less would be boring!

In this volume, Ichigo, Chad, Orihime, Uryu, and Yoruichi are in the realm between the Soul Society and the human world. They are almost caught by the cleaner of the precipice world but they narrowly escape. Once they enter the Soul Society they go to the Sereitei which is the place where all of the soul reapers live. They are met by the gatekeeper who is a giant. Ichigo defeats the gatekeeper and the gatekeeper opens the gate. Beyond the gate they are met with the captain of the third squad of the thirteen court guard companies, Gin Ichimaru. Gin knocks Ichigo and the Gatekeeper back and closes the gate. Ichigo’s group now has to go to Kukaku Shiba’s house. Yoruichi tells the group that Kukaku is the only person that can get them into the Sereitei. Kukaku Shiba’s little brother, Ganju Shiba, shows up to the house Ichigo’s group is staying at and has a bad first impression to Ichigo. They do not get along because of this. The manga ends with the group at Kukaku’s house and learning that Ganju is Kukaku’s brother. 4/5. @GOATreviews of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

I'm still enjoying it, but the story could move a bit faster to be perfectly honest. Rukia's been incarcerated for what seems like months now.
