Despite having read lots of novels set in WWII, this book was my first exposure to Nazi Germany's Lebensborn program for young women who were pregnant with "good German soldiers'" babies. The Lebensborn women ate well and were well cared for during their pregnancies. But for the protagonist, Cyrla, who's half Jewish, pregnant with her Jewish lover's child and in the Lebensborn under an assumed identity, the experience comes with high risk. While a little predictable, this was a well-written book that gave me insight into a new aspect of WWI.
