I liked the movie. Should have done better with planning his adventure though. There is a lot of poisonous plants in the wild so beware read and learn all you can before the end.

Since this was based on an actual event, I opted to watch it with no real expectations. Turned out to be a pretty good flick with a wide geographical scope. It's worth a view.

You should read the book as well.

Long, boring, preachy story of a young man running away from his dysfunctional family. Great music & great scenery, though.

McCandless is a polarizing figure, most figure him to be either a fool or a hero. The film leans toward the hero end of the scale and is well shot and acted.

Watch "Alone in the Wilderness" for an interesting contrast of how Dick Proenneke survived thirty years alone in Alaska.

Excellent movie, totally underrated.
The journey of a young man that is totally idealistic and believes he can deal with whatever the road has prepared for him. I like that the movie shows the impact of the decisions of the young man on his family and how he grows and deals with the situation at the end of the movie.
Great movie to watch, more than once.

Good film. Promising young man life needlessly wasted. Nature is merciless with those naïve enough to think they can get away with it. Plan B never present I his thoughts.

A truly heart-wrenching film based on a true story. Chris McCandless was an introspective, spirited, and intelligent young man who bravely attempted to seek out meaning, truths, and understanding in his own life. The direction he followed and the intensity or extremes in which he may have journeyed are not ours to criticize or be smugly cynical of..... his short life was one of compassion, openness and integrity to his own self-analysis and candid examination of life. The movie gives a glimpse into a volatile home life which likely shaped his views/actions. It was heartbreaking when such hopeful idealism and youthful inexperience led to a tragic ending. Emile Hirsch was bang-on as Chris while Hal Holbrook's performance was deeply touching.

Not bad, a bit long however. I know this is based off a true story, but the fact that, of all the wilderness places in America one could go to escape, he picked Alaska, baffled me the entire time I was watching this. The cold, the obviously lack of food, and the snow tells me that Alaska is one of the LAST places I'd want to head if I was living outside.

Based on a true story of the son of a NASA scientist. The university educated son becomes a hobo and comes across as an arrogant hippie type that travels quite a bit and ends up in Alaska and stays in an abandoned school bus. This long 2 and 1/2 hr film left out the interesting end in the book where he was not "in the wild," but in almost a suburbia with a small town less than six miles a way--he should have figured that out. Great acting, good scenery, and overall well developed script.

Ron Franz (all choked up): "I'm gonna miss you when you go." Christopher McCandless: "I'll miss you too, Ron. But you're wrong if you think that the joy of life comes principally from human relationships. God's place is all around us -- it's in everything, and anything we can experience. People just need to change the way they look at those things." Ron Franz: "Yeah. I'm, I'm gonna take stock of that. You know I am. ...I am. But I wanna tell you something. From the bits and pieces I've put together... you know, from what you've told me about your family -- your mother and your dad... and I know you've got your problems with the church too... But there's some kinda bigger thing we can all appreciate, and it sounds like you don't mind calling it God... But, when you forgive... you love. And when you love, God's light shines on you."
