Faulques, a war photographer, witnessed most of the wars of the end of the 20th Century, but he was never able to capture the photo that would explain the chaos of the universe. Now, as continues to try to understand it, he starts painting a grand circular fresco on the inside wall of a tower on the Mediterranean, disturbed by the memories of a woman he can never forget, and an unexpected visit: a man who wants to kill him.

A retired war photographer named Andres Faulques paints a mural in an isolated place in Spain. One day, a man finds Faulques. The man reveals that he has come to kill him. However, before the man will do the deed, he and Faulques embark on a long conversation that covers war, art, love, betrayal, philosophy and the memories that have brought both men to this place. This is a stunningly written book that will appeal to those who love purely beautiful writing.

A very intense, dense book. Not an easy read but beautifully written and very evocative. Poses difficult questions regarding effect of photographing and reporting of war. Haunting.

This writer (and/or his translator) has nearly unmatched literary skill - dozens of one-liners you want emblazoned on your memory, descriptions of battle so keen they rise to the level of 'virtual' experience. I am eager to read other work by Perez-Reverte.

However, he is so talented that this particular book is a real downer. As a war journalist, he clearly has experienced himself what he works to convey in this book. But it's a savage and hopeless message, and he repeats it again and again.
