The book is written in the first person, by 4th-grader Allie. It reads like a stream-of-consciousness diary. I think the book would be a good model for a summer vacation journaling project, or for recording events during some transition time.

Because Allie tries to figure out WHY things are happening, WHY a kid is doing something, she has some interesting ideas about how to solve her problems, and she actually tries those ideas, then tells how things turned out.

I liked the section (in Chapter 13) where Allie devised a way to give up her geode rocks collection -- and feel OK about it. Allie's a problem solving kid, not a whiner / martyr.

I also liked, in the next chapter, how Allie thinks things through, then TRUSTS her vibes -- regarding her interactions with people (especially manipulators and meanies), and then ACTS intelligently on her vibes. I was GLAD she had the guts to ask Brittany ( on P190) for the truth of what went on at Brittany's house.

Allie neither lets herself be pushed around, nor escalates disputes. (She says that having two little brothers has given her plenty of practice…. )
But, Oh! Keep reading past p190! What a hoot! This is a good chapter!

I REALLY liked Uncle Jay.

This book is NOT literary fiction (so it can't get 4/5 stars). But, I think it (or the series) would be a fun summer-read for a kid 7/8 up. I'll mention it to my granddaughter.

I think that it was an amazing book and poor allie for having to put up with britney and mary~kay ,but in the end kortney is really kind and is very calm considering that her "best friend'' just had a plan to make mary kay her new BFF and who would want their cat stuck in a suitcase and being tossed a round BTW how is that not animal abuse

Allie's parents make a horrible announcement one day. They are moviing from the sub-urbs to a house closer to their work. Moving means Allie is going to have to change schools and give up most of her rock collection. It also means saying goodbye to her best friend. So it is easy to understand that Allie fights her parents tooth and nail. She tries to sabotage the open house, as well as convince her family there is a ghost or something equally horrible living in the attic of the new home.

This is a fairly straight forward novel about change, taking chances and standing up for yourself aimed at the tween market. Allie is forced to make some pretty hard choices in this novel and learns that a friend is not simply someone you play with. She also learns that moving may not be such a bad thing in the end. Worth picking up, especially for the girl with a heavy interest in social scenes in your life.
