I loved the mini series and this pretty much sews up lose ends. All stories didn't end up as expected but it is sweet and well acted.

A good adaptation with good cast, especial Judy Dench.

An amiable tale of 1840s life in an English village and class mixing. Judi Dench is her usual talented self. Note this story is part of a larger BBC series, so some relationships are indirectly mentioned.

I adore this mini series. It hilariously depicts gossiping spinsters and a small town community. The cast is splendid, the characters and storyline are complex and the setting/costumes are gorgeous. I got attached to the characters and they had no problem with shocking me! I definitely just bought it.

LOVE this movie!!! So oddly ingenious and captivating! Elizabeth Gaskell has a way of weaving through a story and wrapping it up that is absolutely scrumptious! You may find yourself getting a little lost in the language or the 5 stories happening at once, but the good news is you get to watch it again and rediscover all the things you missed and heartily enjoy yourself again and again :)
Don't forget to check out the other Elizabeth Gaskell classics!

Absolutely delightful...as others have commented. Series is a conpilation of the Gaskell books. Some dialogue is lifted straight off the page. A true picture of Victorian life....& what we now laugh at the absurdities. But then it was 'everything'. I really enjoyed the dining scene where they were trying to eat with the 'new dangled fork'. A knife & spoon were the usual utensils & people still ate with their fingers. Queen Victoria deplored the fork & forbade it @ Court as she could never get the hang of it. As usual the costumes & sets & acting were amazing. Hollywood take notice!

Return to Cranford - not as good as the first Cranford. New characters appear from nowhere, the old ladies are still about gossiping. No young handsome doctors in this one, but the cow in pajamas reappears!

Entertaining BBC miniseries based on Elizabeth's Gaskell's novel. The cast is excellent with some of England's grand actresses of note - Judi Dench, Imelda Stauton, Francesca Annis. The story is set in 1842 and industrialization is sneaking up on little towns like Cranford. A young doctor settles in Cranford and all the ladies get a bit hysterical. By the end of episode 2, the young doctor is unknowingly engaged / committed to 4 women and of course, the drama unravels. Great acting, beautiful setting, serious at times (the grand dame who owns the local estate) and conscientious (the estate manager who wants a school built in the town) and of course, a bit silly - like the cow that got sick and someone made it - looked like pajamas! But I'm sure the cow probably thought it was engaged to the young, handsome doctor too. Entertaining, the first disc has 5 episodes, you'll probably have to watch them one after another - I did!

Miss Pole: "A new, young doctor is coming to live in our midst! And Dr. Morgan has arranged a house for him; and he'll be kept by a widow who'll not arrive for a fortnight, was married to another doctor, and knows all about disease and surgery! So! What do you think to all of that?" Mrs. Forrester: "...That there is not sufficient sickness here, to keep him entertained!"

Mrs. Forrester: "Miss Pole... once a soul has known affection, 'tis more alert to the advantage of it!" Miss Pole: "You are out to trounce me... because you have had a husband, and I have not!" Mrs. Forrester (picks up a dish, smiling): "Bread and butter?"
