Working with a makeshift search-and-rescue operation, dedicated veterinarian Devon is thrust into a violent cat-and-mouse game involving a vengeful man of dubious trustworthiness and a wounded black Labrador's mysterious pack.

McMillan Palgrave

It begins with a single shot.

Devon Brady is a devoted veterinarian working in a makeshift hospital on a remote search and rescue mission. When a man arrives with his wounded black Lab, Ned, she has no idea that she is about to be plunged into a whirlwind of terror and destruction.

Jude Marrock is out for revenge and has no choice but to involve Devon in a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game with an escalating body count. She doesn’t trust him one bit, but when the shots start flying and friends start falling, she finds herself with nowhere else to run. And there are innocent lives, both human and animal, at stake, including Ned and his mysterious pack. Is Jude her salvation or her damnation? Are the secrets he’s protecting worth killing for . . . or dying for?

With a lightning-fast pace, unforgettable characters, and gut-wrenching action, Dark Summer is compelling new terrain for this master storyteller.

Disappointed. I've read a few of Johansen's book previously and normally I enjoyed. I'd never categorize her as a favorite author of mine but I also wouldn't put her in my run from author's either.

From the first few lines of this book it felt 'off'. It didn't seem to click for me and I couldn't fall into this world. The dialogue and actions just felt cheesy and corny and there were times when I cringed. Physically cringed, because what was being said and written seemed so over the top.

I myself am a dog lover but the lines and emotions were delivered/written so poorly. I have never met a person that would react this way and nor have a I met a dog that was this 'magical'. It felt supernatural without it being that. A dog that can heal faster then others and understand that this? I'm not saying that dogs aren't super smart or can't do extraordinary things but this was all written so awful.

This will probably be the last Johansen book I pick up for quite awhile.
