Mad Max is my favorite movie series. Although this isn't the best movie in the series it's still amazing and better than the 3rd one. And made with only 300,000 dollars!!

George Miller's Mad Max is brilliant in its action-sequences and overall thrills. Though there are some slight malfunctions in its transitions, this film is still far ahead of its time for being a dystopian action thriller in the latter part of the 1970s.

The original Mad Max was a well made Ozplotation film. Not all that great, with the exception of Mel Gibson. Without Mel's range from family man to full on Mad Max it would've been forgotten. The sequel and even the third one are much better, but it's interesting to see this film. It's hard to find Ozplotation films on DVD, and this one reflects the era of Australian cinema. Wish the extras were a lot better. The commentary was rather dull. No Mel, no Miller...

This is a 1979 Australian dystopian action drama directed by George Miller.
The film became the first in a "Mad Max" series, followed by "The Road Warrior (1981)", "Beyond Thunderdome (1985)", and "Fury Road (2015)".
The story is simple.
The bikers brutalize Max's best friend and his family.
This makes Max angry with a mad frenzy that leaves him into only one thing in the world to live for---revenge.
Compared to "Fury Road", the most part is dead boring.
I skimmed some parts and fast-forwarded to the last scene.

Nowhere near as good as its direct sequel or the recent new entry in the series (Road warrior and Fury Road respectively). That said, Mad Max is still well worth a watch although it's age is showing. If Fury Road was your first exposure to Mad Max, then I recommend starting with Road Warrior, as the two rhyme much better thematically.

Envisioned as a "Silent Movie with Sound" this is writer/director George Miller's first foray into his now iconic dystopian film series, and as a result it feels very raw, albeit with a certain mix of charm and naivety to it. Technically, this "new" version of the 1979 classic finally has the theatrical sound restored (unbelievably the US distributors replaced the Australian English with "American" voice-actors). Recommended for fans of face-paced road action.

This is the movie that started it all- and while it might not be the best of the bunch ( that would be the 2nd movie Road Warrior with Fury Road close behind )- it still merits watching if you enjoy this excellent post apocalyptic series.

This is the 1979 version. The newer version is Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).

Fifi: They say people don't believe in heroes anymore. Well damn them! You and me, Max, we're gonna give them back their heroes!
Max: Ah, Fif. Do you really expect me to go for that crap?
Fifi: You gotta admit I sounded good there for a minute, huh?
