Ali lives in Baghdad, Iraq and loves soccer, loud music and... calligraphy! He draws inspiration from Baghdad's most famous calligrapher, who, like Ali, also survived a war. Ali demonstrates the beauty of his language's written form while pondering the gulf between war and peace. This is a wonderful book for children 6 and up.

Ali is a normal child who happens to live in Baghdad. Children and adult children of all ages will relate to Ali and enjoy reading about the culture and skill of calligraphy. This book would be great for those parents who wish to introduce their children to different languages and ways. There is a definite peace and war story here which likely will go over the young folks head for the most part -- the pictures are beautiful though - and I believe the adult reader will enjoy and learn from this book also.

There is a story they tell of Yakut. One fearful day in the year 1258, Mongols attacked Baghdad. As they burned the city and killed hundreds of thousands of people, Yakut fled to a high tower. There, Yakut, created beauty. He shut out the horror and wrote glistening letters of rhythm and grace.
