This is a nice "slice of life" movie that brings us back to: (1) the mid-90s, and (2) figuring out what to do with our lives after college. The second issue, however, isn't really explored all that well. There is a lot of emotion, but few answers. Plus for me, the two main characters are so unlikable that it makes it hard to root for them.

Reality Bites really bites! We didn't even make it through 5 minutes. What's with that amateurish photography? The camera was bouncing around like crazy. That lost us really quick.

Like Cameron Crowe's Singles, Reality Bites is an enjoyable slice of twentysomething life in the '90s. It is the first feature film Ben Stiller directed. The movie does a good job of capturing the struggles and aimlessness at least some college graduates experience as they try to get started in their careers and are fledgling adults. It was ahead of the curve in referencing reality TV at a time when that was primarily MTV's The Real World--oh, the good old days. The soundtrack is fun and includes Ethan Hawke singing decades before he played Chet Baker in Born to Be Blue. Reality Bites is rated PG-13 for some language, drug content and sensuality.
