In 1974 on a walking safari in Luangwa National Park in eastern Zambia I identified 83 species of birds in 1 week. I wish I had known the bird-finding tricks deployed in this novel so I could have saved myself a lot of money by simply looking around my community of Kabwe, Zambia.

Despite the title, this is an utterly charming short novel about two middle-aged East Indian Kenyans who are vying to be the one who invites a lovely widow to the high commissioner's ball. They decide to settle the issue with a contest--who can see the most species of birds in Kenya (and that's a LOT of bird species!) within a certain time period. Funny, poignant, and ultimately highly satisfying. Highly recommended!

Birders in Kenya in the style of an Alexander McCall Smith story, but not good and full of inaccuracies.

I adored this book - sweet, gentle, charming... but with cliff hangers that keep you reading! You just have to know what happens to poor Mr. Malik! Highly recommended.
