This story collection is outstanding. This was also my introduction to the author's work, Lauren Groff. I will be reading all of her books from here on. I was astounded by the comprehensive quality and sophistication of her fiction.

I recommend this book of stories to any reader, and I hope they become many. Because Groff deserves the attention.

These stories are really well written. The female characters are so vivid and [if you're a woman] you'll find yourself identifying with them; thinking their same thoughts. You might if you are a male reader, but I wouldn't know. My favorite stories are: "Lucky Chow Fun" [it's about the everyday evil that exists in a mundane small town vis-a-vis a "regular" girl's existance], Blythe [about a female lawyer who becomes a stay-at-home mom and then gets into writing poetry], and Delicate Edible Birds [about the choices all of us women make everyday- no win situations- not as dramatic as set in WWII France] Wonderful collection.

"And it is a happy ending, perhaps, in the way that myths and fairy tales have happy ending; only if one forgets the bloody, dark middles, the fifty dismembered girls in the vat, the parents who sent their children into the woods with only a crust of bread. I like to think it's a happy ending, though it is the middle that haunts me." p.39
