A dark and wickedly funny joyride from the depths of sexual compulsion to the heights of the Second Coming. Victor Mancini courts the love and money of complete strangers via a demented con that might just kill him. But first, Victor must save his dying, delusional mother.
"Some stretches are very funny, although the laughter is undermined by the desperation and sadness of the situations."--Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"It adds up to an entertaining collection of vignettes strung together by a sarcastic loudmouth whose heart is breaking under his sophomoric bravado."--New York Times
"The movie veers with surprising ease between comedy and tragedy."--ReelViews

First off not what I expected. Kinda of slow but I liked it as a whole yes it's tame version but what do you expect it would need an x rating to do right. not for kids! Story seems good I bet the book is much better.

Great movie based on a great book. I thought I translated very well into a movie if you take into account it's it's own thing. Funny a bit crude and out there but nothing to make you not want to watch it. And Sam Rockwell I mean come on.

The book is exponentially better. With the exception of Fight Club, Palahniuk can't really effectively be translated to the screen without an NC-17 rating.

Entertaining but disappointingly tame Hollywood version of Chuck Palahniuk’s magnificently obscene novel of the same name. Among the film’s problems are too many drastic plot changes that rob it of the poetry of the original, and sex scenes that are way too watered down. (See my review of Palahniuk’s book on BiblioCommons for more reasons why the author’s erotic sensibility can't be translated from fiction to film.)

WOW... Another movie I really liked! Good movie... Different movie...! Not your average good guy-bad guy scenario! That's two in a row (see FIVE FINGERS), after viewing over a dozen dogs lately (check "My Collection")!
Sometimes movies can be good - just telling a story - even if the story, and especially it's characters are, for the most part, sordid types... even despicable. CHOKE is just such a movie. It makes you blush, because it has a certain horny charm to it, even while it strives to be shockingly didactive!.
Read this from the dvd cover: "CHOKE is a dark and wickedly funny joyride, from the depths of sexual compulsion to the heights of the Second Coming... a gleefully twisted tale of dysfunction, salvation, love and libido.
I have to agree with the cover... there were some parts in it that were so twistedly ironic that I burst out laughing uncontrollably at the sheer audacity of the sight gag - or the punch-line! And the theme is very sexually explicit and perverse - so parents, be wary of that. Do not let your little kids view it!
You also might not like Sam Rockwell's character Victor. From beginning to end he's ribald and repulsive all-at-once. But he's never boring! And his bitter-sweet devotion to his psychotic surrogate mother played by the irascible Anjelica Huston, despite all the many ways she had failed him, is symbolically almost straight out of the New Testament. "...If the Good Book tells us..." - a pole dancer/stripper with Mary Magdalene overtones, intones, while getting a beer from the fridge - "...that people are religiously transformed, not by being loved, but by the act of loving somebody, no matter how difficult it is..." - then Victor's love for and ultimate forgiveness of a woman who actually kidnapped him from his true mother, takes on Biblical proportions. That's how outrageously the lessons of life are parsed out and meted in this kooky flick!
There's plenty of twists and turns in plot and character development - and the dialogue and running commentary by Rockwell's character is especially clever. And any director (the movie was written & directed by Clark Gregg) that would bring back Joel Grey (remember him with Liza Minnelli singing: "Money Makes The World Go Around - The World Go Around-The World-Go-Around! - in CABARET?) in a cameo role as a reforming sex-addict - had his viewers' gentle memories in mind when he included him in this film! That and making the case that there really is a mythical "Mile High Club" up there in them yonder blue skies of take-your-pick-Airline-in-America! This film alone, shown wherever planes take flights - will revive the flagging American airlines industry all on its own!

I really liked the movie mythos, for its brash, ballsy, balderdash imbroglio of a plot! People with prurient interests might like it for other things!!!

Skip It – Choke (2008) 92 min. One of the requisites for a likeable film is have a connection with the main characters or at least sympathize with them on some level. In this film, about a man (Sam Rockwell) who cons rich people by faking choking spells at restaurants [he’d build relationships with his “saviours” and accept financial help from them] to pay for his mother’s senior residence care while spending time at sex addiction support meetings in order to have sex, Rockwell is the least likeable guy I ever seen on film. I didn’t enjoy the premise nor the contrived humour in all this; the situation is just not funny. Oh yes, for shock value, they throw in the possibility that the Sam Rockwell character could be a clone of Jesus Himself?!? Suffice it to say, pick up any other movie other than this trash.
