In my opinion, not the title of the movie but the content of it is a real problem. I, personally, became disgusted with the contents. It was really hard, disturbing, and sickening for me to finish watching the movie to the end. I do NOT recommend this movie to anyone; sometimes, there is a thing we'd better not know or experience even secondly thru a movie.
I needed some time to erase what I saw from this movie.

Despite the film's shocking title, the plot centers on Jasira's sexual awakening. As other patrons have pointed out, some scenes are very difficult to watch, but are also well acted and true-to-life. There aren't many coming of age films that portray the diversity of the American experience, so I liked that this story offered a fresh perspective. The special features also include two conversations with the author of the book, the director, the actors, and leaders of the Sikh and Muslim communities. They discuss the provocative title and the Arab American experience in modern society, as well as race relations and what we can do to improve them. While they hold opposing viewpoints, each of them contributes a unique perspective. I highly recommend the film or even just the special features to anyone interested in civil rights, religion, cultural studies, and/or history.

The movie is no where NEAR as good as the book, which is to be expected. However, I was very disappointed in the film. DO check out the BOOK!

This film shows, among other things, the way parents' sexual sensibilities contribute to the way their children perceive their own sexuality. It's a very provocative film, far more so than the packaging suggests. Rated R, it's potentially disturbing for any age.

This movie is about a lot of things, it is about racial discrimination, and parent-child relationships, but more than anything it is about a young girl's sexual awakening. While this movie may be hard for some to watch, I think it is a well scripted and wonderfully acted coming of age story. I would recommend this movie to fans of more off beat dramas such as American Beauty.

I didn't know what to expect when I watched this movie, but it wasn't this. It came from the people who created American Beauty, and there was certainly a similar feel to this film.

I borrowed this movie without knowing much more than the information on the DVD case about it being a coming of age story. Well, if your average coming of age story includes child molestation coupled with racism and abuse, then yes, this might just qualify.
It was also extremely uncomfortable and hard to watch in parts, even though it did fit well into an art-house movie category. But I didn't know that was what I'd borrowed.

Rifat Maroun: Oh, I'm supporting the war.
Gail Monahan: I thought you were protesting it.
Rifat Maroun: I'm protesting one aspect of the war and supporting another aspect. See, the mark of intelligence, Gail, is having the capacity of holding two conflicting ideas in your head at one time.
