Unspeakably bad and intellectually dishonest, to put it mildly. The direction, tone, and even the color scheme are reprehensible. From the Gothic lettering to the lurid lighting, we GET the idea, vis-a-via Lumet's distastefully unsubtle touch, that Newman's lawyer protagonist is in Hell. That's where the movie is, too, and it should have stayed there. Compelling performance by James Mason as the unabashedly EVIL attorney on the other side, but unless you must see Mason play villain, SKIP THIS JUNK. The usually wonderful Charlotte Rampling has nada of interest to do in a worthless part.

If you like a good court room drama, you will like this movie. I did enjoy the good acting and strong script. It is not too violent. It could be too sexual for children.

I remember asking myself how did Paul Newman not win a Best Actor award for this movie. (turns out that Ben Kingsley won it for his role in "Gandhi) Superlative acting from so many people. Too many "best scenes" to choose from. A great film; one of my favorites.

A wonderful Sydney Lumet film starring Paul Newman and Charlotte Rampling. The caliber of the actors alone is worth the watch. An interesting courtroom drama about a lawyer who falls on hard times and takes on case to redeem his past.

Would be outstanding if not for the female lead who is wooden and uninteresting.

Fierce drama that pits Paul Newman in one of his best film parts as attorney Frank Galvin. You won't want to miss a minute of the picture. It is a nail bitter throughout! Director Sidney Lumet is interviewed with Paul Newman in a bonus disc. Truly a must see dvd set!

Although I prefer Golden Age Hollywood movies (40s and 50s), this is one of my favorite ever contemporary films! Can watch multiple times back-to-back in one sitting (which I have done), and never tire of it. Excellent drama on the law profession and medical malpractice. A modern classic must-see!
