I read this book in 2009. This is a review I wrote on it at the time.
I heard about this book on NPR. Comments on the radio during an interview with the author included discussion about his amazing "voice" in the book. This included his grasp of New York ghetto slang as well as "cop speak". This intrigued me as a writer. Richard Price had experience living in New York ghettos and he researched the book by riding around with cops, etc.
After reading the book I also was struck by the detail and dialogue. I enjoy writing dialogue and I agree, that Price is very good.
All in all, this isn't my usual cup of tea..., New York crime stories, etc. But this book was very engaging. I don't see why it wouldn't make a good movie---there is a lot of "meat" to work with here for a project like that.
Got a bit tedious in the last third. Caught myself skimming just to finish it.
Richard Price has a habit of looking at the not so pretty side of life. He's such a good writer you don't mind too much.
Beautiful. 5 stars.
Wonderful. Read if only for the dialogue.
