His life changed history. His courage changed lives. Harvey Milk is a middle-aged New Yorker who, after moving to San Francisco, became a Gay Rights activist and city politician. On his third attempt, he was elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in 1977. His election makes him the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the United States. The following year, both he and the city's mayor, George Moscone, were shot to death by former city supervisor, Dan White, who blamed his former colleagues for denying White's attempt to rescind his resignation from the board. Based on the inspiring true story of Harvey Milk.

Sean Penn does a great job of portraying Harvey Milk, a complex and controversial character who was a prominent figure in the struggle for gay equality in the 1970s. This compelling look at his life follows Milk's path as a once-closeted Republican who moves to San Francisco and becomes more and more active in the political scene, hoping to make a difference and eventually paying the ultimate price. Normally I can't stand Penn; he was almost unrecognizable in this well-deserved Academy-award winning role.

Does a great job of tracking the movement and fight for gay rights/protection against discrimination; also captures the mood and feel of 1970s Castro District in SF. Sean Penn does a good job as the out, corporate insurance executive turned activist, as first-time supervisor Harvey Milk.

I was nine when the Milk/Moscone assassinations happened, and have vague recollections of the news reports. Loved this biopic, looks like Sean Penn got an Oscar for his role as Supervisor Harvey Milk. The film points out that Milk lost several races before finally winning election, and while I gather he supported a number of progressive causes (and sought support from various groups), I have the impression here that jiggering boundary lines to make a largely gay-oriented district helped him win that last race. But ever so glad he did! Civil rights have progressed by leaps and bounds since the 1970's.

Such a powerful story about a great man Harvey Milk! A bio about gay right activist and community leader, who was assassinated in 1978 in San Fran. The assassination was followed by an organized march of 30,000 people in honor of Harvey and San Fran major George Moscone, who was also murdered.
The ridiculous defense of the murderer got even into my forensic psychology classes - simply unbelievable. The verdict was outrageous and lead to "The White Night Riots", the most violent uprising in the history of the gay movement.
The movie was long, but worth of watching.
Sean Penn as Harvey Milk excelled as always.
A must watch movie!

I found it painfully hard to get into this film. I shut it off & feel I avoided losing 2 hours I wouldn't otherwise get back.
