The summer of 1899 is hot in Calpurnia Virginia Tate's sleepy Texas town, and there aren't a lot of good ways to stay cool. Her mother has a new wind machine from town, but Callie might just have to resort to stealthily cutting off her hair, one sneaky inch at a time. She also spends a lot time at the river with her notoriously cantankerous grandfather, an acid naturalist. It turns out that every drop of river water is teeming with life, all you have to do is look through a microscope!

Add a CommentThis is a lovely story, my 3 boys, age range 14-10 years, all enjoyed it! I will be purchasing this book for my god-daughter and nieces.
This is a good story of a girl and her grandpa who share a love of nature and science. It is both funny and serious.
Told in the first person, Callie doesn't want to be molded into a little lady, she wants an interesting, intellectual life, Natalie Ross reads it like a young adult not an 11-yr-old but it works.
