In three volumes, some 350 alphabetically arranged signed entries cover the ancient world to the present day and all regions of the world. The editors have taken a broad approach and have included "any event that has been publicly and reasonably debated as falling with the subject matter....": groups that have been the target of genocide, perpetrators, reparation and redress, courts and tribunals, shapers of public opinion (the media), national and international policies, and biographies. Each with a bibliography, the entries range in length from 500 to 5,000 words and concern events, individuals, groups, institutions and laws, theories and philosophy, prevention, prosecution, and cultural representations. Cross references and a thematic outline of contents guide readers, as does the comprehensive index in the third volume, which also contains a glossary, filmography, and devotes about one-third of its pages to relevant primary sources. The writing is serious but accessible to a broad general audience. Editor-in-chief Shelton (George Washington University Law School) and her editorial board have collected and shaped contributions from experts affiliated with universities and institutions in many countries.
