In this sequel to Card's bestselling novel "Empire," President Averell Torrent launches America into a get-tough, this-world-is-our-empire foreign policy stance. When Captain Bartholomew "Cole" Coleman sees the danger Torrent poses to American democracy and the potential disasters involved in his foreign military adventures, he quickly runs afoul of Torrent and, while on the run, finds proof that Torrent orchestrated a presidential assassination.

Timely even in 2017, and probably important to read. Sadly Cord got preachy several times which sort of spoiled the book for me.

While the first book was interesting, elements of this sequel took my breath away. Specifically, some of the youngest characters in this story seized my attention and didn't let it go. In my opinion they stole the show. Two boys from completely different backgrounds choose to take terrible risks to help the victims of an epidemic. Their character arcs, threaded throughout the bigger story, made for some of the most powerful fiction I've ever read. Just don't expect a light, happy read. Card respects children too much to make things artificially easy for them, especially when they take on responsibility that most adults would be terrified of.
