The best retelling of Beauty and the Beast that I've ever read!

A solid read. Spooky, what with tortured ghosts and misty forests, but it never really loses its grounding in reality despite its fantasy plot. Also, Mangus is amazing and if I were Caitrin, I would have gone for him. Just saying. He can do it all, and bake a pie while doing it. Can the prince bake a pie? I doubt it. Glad to recommend it for fairy tale fans, especially with its impressive female lead. It might linger with me for a good long while, honestly.

I love Juliet Marillier's books and this one didn't disappoint. It's a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, which is one of my all-time favourite fairy tales. This one takes place in Ireland in the middle ages or so. Besides being a great fantasy story and sweet romance, there is a lot of character growth. As usual, Marillier adds a lot of likable characters. Even though they are all flawed, the main character, Caitrin, does not hesitate to see the good in everyone. I recommend it for anyone who likes fantasy with a bit of romance.

Mysterious. Historical, with a mix of fantasy/ghost story. Touches on honour and morality. Really enjoyed it!

Mysterious and spooky. I particularly liked that the supernatural elements in the story were not stereotypical ghosts.

This is the first book by Marillier that I've read, and I quite enjoyed it. It isn't the type of book that I normally read (at all), but the characters and setting were fascinating and engaging. The main character was brave, intelligent, and open minded. The supporting characters were likable and interesting. (The love interest wasn't really likable, but I found myself rooting for him anyways.) The story was amazing, the plotline dark, complex and compelling. I look forward to reading more of her books.

I do not view suicide as wicked, just terribly sad. There is only one death, but it is like a stone cast into a pond—the ripples stretch far. Such an act must leave a burden of sorrow, guilt, shame and confusion on an entire family. A decision to end one's life must be still more devastating for those left behind. I cannot imagine the degree of hopelessness someone must feel to contemplate such an act. Even in the darkest time, even when God was utterly silent, I never...there was always something in my life, something I can't even define for you, that stopped me from taking that step. The thought of such utter despair chills me.
