Mark is a desperate unempolyed writer who lives in a world where everyone unfailingly tells the truth. People don't even know what fiction is. Every thought, no matter how humiliating or harsh, tumbles out unvarnished. Then one day, Mark becomes so desperate he concocts a lie. In a world where everyone is unfailingly honest, a lie is believed with total and absolute gullibility. Mark can get anything he wants. The one thing he truly wants is the love of a girl named Anna who happens to be the one person he can't bring himself to lie to.

Funny. But more than that it's clever, interesting and beautiful. Wonderful movie. Watched it three times before I returned it.

Light and fun on the surface, but there's some deeper philosophy here too. It won't be the best film you've ever seen, but it's worth watching.

I could not get into this movie at all and gave up after 30 minutes. Not funny at all and very predictable. Best not to bother with.

I liked Ricky Gervais who can make anything funny. His British humour saved this American film.

I'm a Ricky Gervais fan, but this movie was disappointing. It doesn't really hold together as a film, as the premise is quite weak. Plus it is predictable and fairly boring.

(1) I think you have to be a fan of British comedy to get this
(2) Although the previews don't show it, there's a lot of stuff about religion in here. So if you're the type who thinks blasphemers should be burned at the stake, skip it.
(3) The trailers did not do this movie justice.

Funny flick about a world in which no one ever developed the ability to deceive anyone else - until one man unintentionally invents lying (he doesn't even know what to call it). Mostly enjoyable for the clever scenes playing with people's inability not only to lie, but also to filter their thoughts and words. Love the difference in the waiters between the cheaper restaurant and the more expensive one, eg. So many cameos by great actors (look for Philip Seymour Hoffman, among others). Just a fun way to spend an evening (or any other time you choose to watch it).

There are bad movies due to lack of talent. Sometimes these are at least entertaining. But this movie is bad because it is so disappointing. The cast is good, the idea has promise. The script and direction are dismal! So predictable. OK I get the idea that everyone tells the truth, but why do they have to always tell you what's on their mind? Ugh!

Bob: Hi, I'm Bob I'm the spokesperson for the Coca-Cola company. I'm here today to ask you to continue buying coke. Sure it's a drink you've been drinking for years, and if you still enjoy it, I'd like to remind you to buy it again sometime soon. It's basically just brown sugar water, we haven't changed the ingredients much lately, so there's nothing new I can tell you about that. We changed the can around a little bit though. See, the colors here are different there, and we added a polar bear so the kids like us. Coke is very high in sugar and like any high calorie soda it can lead to obesity in children and adults who don't sustain a very healthy diet. So that's it, it's coke. It's very famous, everyone knows it. I'm Bob, I work for coke, and I'm asking you to not stop buying coke. That's all. It's a bit sweet. Thank you.

Richard Bellison: [surprised by the homeowner during a burglary] What are you doing here? It's Monday at noon. You're not supposed to be home now!
Man at the Door: If you must know, I'm incredibly stressed at work, I've come home early, I'm having a bit of me-time. More importantly, what are you doing?
Richard Bellison: Well, I was gonna rob your house.
Man at the Door: I don't like that idea. Not a fan of that at all.
Richard Bellison: I'm not gonna do it now, because you're in.
Man at the Door: Do you know what's gonna happen? I'm gonna call the police, you're gonna be arrested.
Richard Bellison: Well, I'm just gonna leave, and you don't know my name.
Man at the Door: What is your name?
Richard Bellison: Richard Bellison.
