Start by reading the Post script [author's note] to get an appreciation for Cullen's extensive research and imaginative integration of historical fact into a beautifully told 'Herstory'. Some interesting re-balancing of the politics which underpinned the reign of King Phillip of Spain and the impact of syphilis on the thrones of Europe in the middle ages. I am sorry that this book did not get the attention of 'Girl with Pearl Earring'. It is a far better novel.

I felt so much a part of the scenes and events described, the tastes and textures of lavish surroundings. Excellent characterization ; a delicious taste of history. Even a brief meeting of Michelangelo.
