I can't believe the late critic Roger Ebert gave this movie an enthusiastic thumbs up. I found it almost unwatchable, and I've watched plenty of extremely violent movies over the years. But there's a point where cinematic violence becomes pornography; this movie surpasses that point with flying colors, thanks to some nerve toxin, adrenaline injections, scalpel, circular saw plus a few additional cutting tools. The plot is far fetched to the point of being preposterous, not even a genius could have achieved the stunts depicted, not even if he had a whole decade to set them up. If you thought the tunnel escape in Shawshank Redemption with a rock hammer was absurdly unrealistic, it pales in comparison to the escape tunnel depicted in this movie. Think of this movie as Charles Bronson's "Death Wish" combined with the "Saw" franchise on steroids, with just a dash of "Fracture" thrown in.

I thought this to be an interesting film, top notch actors in Butler and Foxx, and a pretty good script - - although something about the ending annoyed me, can't say quite what.
This is fiction, of course, finding anyone like the main character in the intel community seems highly unlikely today. [Am reminded that before Major Hasan killed and wounded those many soldiers at Ft. Hood, he had been corresponding via email with that radical cleric hiding in Yemen, and the NSA correctly/successfully intercepted said emails, turned them over to the FBI, who judged that no further action need be taken, including WHAT THOSE BLOODY INCOMPETENTS should have done, which was to notify the Army chain of command! American soldiers died because of the incompetency of the FBI. And the classic screw-up at both the National Counterterrorism Center [NCTC] and CIA - - or was it intentional? The NCTC received an al Qaeda intercept [again from NSA, which evidently has been functioning quite adequately since before 9/11, regardless of what Hayden claimed] which indicated a Nigerian was being trained in Yemen for a terrorist strike in the USA, and next the NCTC receives the info that the father of a Nigerian has contacted the US embassy in Nigeria warning them that his son has gone radical and is in Yemen - - and the NCTC couldn't possibly connect this data?!?!?! That Nigerian, the Underwear Bomber, was refused entrance on an airliner bound for Detroit at a French airport by French airport security - - because the Nigerian had NO passport, NO luggage, a one-way ticket, smelled bad and kept mumbling, // Jihad, jihad! \\ - - and then a CIA type from the US embassy arrives and vouchsafes for him, overriding French airport security! Now explain that to me?!?!?

This was intriguing until it belly-flopped into a pool of goat dung at the end.

Clever, but in the same token, an absolutely *preposterous* cat and mouse premise.

All I can say is Wow!! I can believe that when they finished reading the script Fox and Buttler didn’t burn it. This is a bad and very unrealistic movie. Do yourself a favour and turn it off after the judge dies. That part is interesting!!

Well made thriller with a strong cast. Violence is quite jarring at times.

Gerard Butler is excellent in this suspense thriller that looks at revenge from a different angle, one of a man already in jail & puts himself in there on purpose.

Jaimie Foxx looks like he is sleep walking through his performance and needs a kick in the but to get him to "act" properly. Not his best performance at all.

But the movie is engaging due to the other performances.
