The science was very weak; more of a fantasy than Science Fiction; overhyped.

I was skeptical when I first heard about this one. But it really is good and epic!

I'm very obsessed with this movie since the first time I ever saw it and I can't wait for the second one to come out

If you like cartoons you are going to love this movie. After a short time the animation became just that: Animation.

This movie was creative and beautiful and I was actually obsessed with it at one point in my life. Still kinda am.

I had not seen this movie since it first came out (8 years ago). It holds up well. Great story, acting, action, and special effects. A truly remarkable film not to be missed. Might be a bit too intense for kids under 10.

Set in the year 2151 - This visually spectacular (yet emotionally haywire) tale of a ruthless rape attempt (by humans) of the planet Pandora for its valuable resources and the near-annihilation of the Na'vi peoples (an indigenous humanoid species of said planet) borrowed heavily (I think) from the well-known story of Tarzan.

Of course, Avatar's story was set on a much greater scale than that of a mere Tarzan-like "jungle" tale - But, all the same, that's how it appeared to me.

Avatar's story also brought to mind the reality of Christopher Columbus's "discovering" of America in 1492 and his search for valuable resources and the devastating effect that that fateful incident had on all of the native peoples of both the American continents.

With a film of this one's striking visual magnitude, it's so easy for the viewer to be completely swept away by the sheer beauty and wonder of it all and to just allow the story to take a back seat for itself.

And that is exactly what happened here with Avatar. It, unfortunately, relied far too heavily on the splendour of its visuals to carry it through and that left us with a story that already had the wind clearly knocked out of its sails by the half-way point.

*Note* - Directed by James Cameron - Avatar's budget was $237 million.

This movie follows Jake Sully, a paraplegic, and his adventures on Pandora, a planet filled with different creatures called Na’vi. Avatars are people who can be human and Na’vi, and these people are able to explore Pandora (the environment is poisonous to humans). Jake Sully is one of these avatars and he is sent on a mission to Pandora. However, the Colonel’s plans are purest as he attempts to exterminate the Na’vi. Sully will not let this happen as he creates bonds with the Na’vi. The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful and the animation and effects were incredible. If that’s not enough, even the plot was good.

An extraordinarily visually arresting film (well, movie). The first half gives some hope that the story - a sometimes annoying, sometimes/ someways offensive, (but somewhat challenging too) mishmash of historical myths, mytho-poetic tropes, deep ecology, capitalism ,and militarism - will give, or challenge the viewer to interpret, a new way of looking at the world, but the second half, after the main character falls in love, the movie degrades into a action film with the moral insight of a comic book. The biological and geological phantasy was quite eye opening and imaginative; I hope its salvaged and used for more important films in the future.

By 2148, humans have severely depleted Earth's natural resources. In 2154, the RDA Corporation mines for a valuable mineral—unobtanium—on Pandora, a densely forested habitable moon of the gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system.[10] Pandora, whose atmosphere is poisonous to humans, is inhabited by the Na'vi, 10-foot (3.0 m)-tall, blue-skinned, sapient humanoids[33] who live in harmony with nature and worship a mother goddess called Eywa.
