A surprising change of style from MGMT's debut album. The dance-floor techno influences have fallen away somewhat, with sparingly used synthesizers now merely augmenting the shimmering guitars that drive the songs. Some of these tracks (such as "Song For Dan Treacy") have an almost retro sound. What hasn't changed is MGMT's cynical worldview, which they continue to explore with alternating anger ("I Found A Whistle"), mellow philosophizing ("Siberian Breaks"), near-panic ("Flash Delirium"), their trademark acerbic wit ("Brian Eno", "Congratulations") and always, always, with catchy hooks that leave you dancing even as the world burns.

Congratulations is different from MGMT’s first album but equally great. The whole album has a 1960’s feel to it. It ranges in sound from pop punk, monster rock organ, to the Mama’s and the Papa’s, with a little Jackson 5 thrown in. It is a very interesting mix that all comes together in a crazy sort of mashup.Staff Picks October 2010
